Corruption In India

BY VIRAJ THACKER

What Is Corruption?
One of the definitions given
to corruption is giving
something to someone with
power so that he will abuse
his power and act favoring
the giver. Another definition
given is the offering, giving,
soliciting or acceptance of an
inducement or reward, which

Some facts and important points about corruption

Our country INDIA is ranked 70th as the corrupted country worldwide.

As said by the TV personality Priya Tendulkar If there is corruption in the
society, each one of us is responsible. It is wrong to blame the system. Why
do we separate ourselves from the system? Dont we vote the corrupt
power? Dont we endlessly suffer from all deprivations and refuse to raise
our voice? And then when it becomes too much, we crib.
Corruption is the symptom of a disease that has as its progenitors overcentralization of power, non-transparency in all government functions and
lack of accountability.
Lack of transparency gets majority votes for being the single largest
factor that provides an ideal breeding ground for corruption. Crores from
the development projects are siphoned off annually to Swiss Bank
Accounts before anybody notices anything amiss.
Aresh Shirali an economist of our country says Corruption Thrives On
Opacity.
H.D.Shourie, founder of Delhi-based Common Cause says I think political
funding is at the root of all corruption.
The familiar saying, Touch one Touch all, and therefore touch none
grades their philosophy.
Corruption is primarily and ultimately responsible for misguide-ness in
India. False tax returns are filed. Tax are not realized honestly. Crimes are
increasing at an alarming rate. Corruption is so deep rated in the
administrative machinery of our country.

Statement For The Corruption

The fear of God is gone, and

so is the fear of law. Few are
caught and fewer convictedof every 100 corruption
related crimes, only about six
are finally convicted. All this

CORRUPTION
Total monetary value of petty corruption
nationally in 11 services is estimated at
Rs.21,068 Crores.
There are difference between the ranking of
services based on composite corruption
This is because certain services like Schools (upto
12th) which have
large citizen interface are likely to have higher
monetary value of corruption just because more
people are interacting with the department.

AMOUNT OF BRIBE DEMANDED

how the demand of bribe is increasing and in what

amount .

The above numbers clearly suggest that Bribery in India

is at a grass root level with close 86% demands were done
for $5000 or less (2,50,000 rupees or less, out which more
than half were for $26 (Rs. 1300) or less.
Because, corruption takes place at such a grass root level,
it is extremely difficult to contain it.
Having said that, 14 people out of 100 taking bribes are for
amount more than $5000 (Rs. 2,50,000). Actually, if you
look at the top officials are even more corrupt. I will tell
you why I say that
The number of big bosses is merely 1%-2% of all officials,
yet according to the report 14% of bribes are of huge
amounts, showing that big bosses are involved even more
compared to low level officials who are taking bribes.
On a sidenote, Chinas number is much higher with 24% of
reported demands were for amounts between $5,001 and
$50,000, 6% of reported demands were for amounts
between $50,001 and $500,000, and 6% were

NATURE OF BRIBE DEMAND IN INDIA

No guesses here if you want to get your work done, bribe
them! That's what is quite clear and in line with the notion
we have.

More than half of all the bribes were

paid to get the work in time !
77% of all reported bribe demands in India are related to
the avoidance of
harm, including securing the timely delivery of a service
which is actually a right of a person (such as clearing
customs or having a telephone line installed) and receiving
payment for services already rendered
Only 12% of the bribe demands were for gaining a personal
or business advantage (including exercising influence with
or over another government official, receiving inappropriate
favorable treatment or winning new business).
One thing for sure, we are now used to this corrupt
system and take it in our stride as part & parcel. We

is what our corrupt officials prefer..
If in doubt, give cash, as 92% of all bribes are

NREGA

(National Rural Employment Guarantee Act)

Figures of above table might be impressive. However, in actual, laborers of

every state are not getting 100 days employment. There is big mismatch
between facts and figures.

Regarding corruption, once former prime minister of India, Rajeev Gandhi

had rightly said, If the Central government gives 100 paisa to general
people through the system, only 10 paisa reach up to the real person. His
statement is still pertinent for the Indian system.

No doubt, NREGA is good scheme. The Central government is also

providing funds to state government for effective implementation of this
scheme. But corruption is a big hurdle in its way.

At every level, funds are distributing among concerned officials. Even

village sarpanch and secretary is misusing the funds. Laborers are too not
being hired for any work.
In reality, at village level, people of elite class are getting 100 days
jobs.Interestingly, they are getting remuneration without doing any kind of
job. Millions have been enlisted in job cards.
Fake and benami laborers are mentioned on the paper, quite similar to fake

NREGA

(National Rural Employment Guarantee Act)

At the ground level; the sarpanch and secretary are frequently

taking help of illegal means to absorb government funds. In this
scenario, how can we believe any government data?

However, this is high time for every concerned officials of NREGA

to implement the scheme in reality, because this is directly linked
with the development of the country.Besides, NREGA is also the
first programme that has been implemented with full IT support.

TATA Consultancy Services, Indias largest IT/ITES sector company

has designed the software solution for the state of Andhra
Pradesh. It may be extended to other states too.
Therefore, we people must think of how we can make NREGA a
successful scheme? This scheme may check farmers suicide and
help the real poor people, all over the country only if there is a
little less greed and avarice, a little less corruption in the system.

Conclusion
At last we would like to inform that if we
want to reduce the corruption rate of our
country INDIA then first of all , these
corrupt politicians, and all the people
involved should be punished for the
fraudulent to their nation. This is
achievable by only the youth generation
like us. So lets Awake and move forward
to the Growth of own Motherland. The time
has arrived to pay the revenue of life
which was a gift by this wonderful nation.
We must rise towards the improvement,
