60S WOMENS
FASHION

THE HIPPIE FASHION

began in the 60s. This group


rebelled against the war, promoted
peace, love, and made a huge
fashion statement. They where
seen in tie-dyes, free-flowing skirts
and beads. Their face or bodies
were painted with peace symbols
or other meaningful designs.

ELEGANT FASHION

The complete opposite style from


the hippies was Jacqueline
Kennedy. Often described as
glamorous, this first lady was a
major style influence of 60's
fashion with her elegant dress.
Kennedy's style was very classy
and polished.

TWIGGY FASHION
Model and actress Twiggy was one
fashion icon who women admired
in the 60s and many wanted to
copy her look. She was named
"The Face of 1966." Twiggy's
signature look was drawn on
eyelashes and a heavily made-up
eye. Big, dramatic eyes and a pale
face were the sought- after look in
makeup in the 60s

60S FASHION FOR MEN

MODS VS ROCKERS

The two were notorious rivals. The Rockers


were heavily into 50s rock-and roll, big bikes
like the Harley Davidson, leather jackets and
Elvis greased back hairstyles. The Mods
were classier, listening to British bands such
as The Beatles. They preferred Vespers over
Harleys and took their trends from
respectable French and Italian clothes
designers. Most commonly they wore
tailored suits with slim shirts, pants and
skinny tiesslimmed down to just an inch

A staple in the mens

Nehru Collar

Used in both jacket and shirt


collars, this Indian inspired lookhas
a mandarin type stand up collar
and is tight fitting withsmall buttons
from neck to waist. Famous nehru
wearersinclude The Beatles, The
Monkees, and Dr. Evil.

Music in the 60s

R&B
Was made up of many African
Americans Didnt receive as much
credit or popularity as less talented
white groups because of racial
barriers. Some of their songs were
sung by popular white performers
and became hits. After civil rights
movement their music became
recognized and enjoyed by many.

SCENE

Had a specific sound that soon


spread across the nation. The surf
& drag or fun in the sun. Surf rock
took over the musical industry till
the mid 1960s then it was replaced
with psychedelic rock. Some of the
most influential groups were the
beach boys and the surfaris

THE BEATLES AND


ROLLING STONES
-The main controversy occurred
when lead singer John Lennon
stated that the Beatles were more
well known than Jesus.
- Their songs supported anti-war
and had lifestyles that involved
drug use.

They were thought to be a bad


influence on the youth of that
generation

After a two-year stint, Elvis Presley returns from Germany.
President Dwight Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act of 1960 into
law
President Kennedy advises all "prudent families" to have a bomb
shelter.
The DNA genetic code is broken.
Construction of the Berlin Wall begins, restricting movement between
East Berlin and West Berlin
The Vietnam War officially begins (1961)
"Barbie" gets a boyfriend when the "Ken" doll is introduced.
President Kennedy is assasinated (1963)
The Coca-Cola Company debuts its first diet drink, TaB cola.

Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in
Memphis, Tennessee. Riots erupt in major American cities for
several days afterward.
The White Album is released by The Beatles.
Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.
Members of a cult led by Charles Manson murder Sharon Tate, (who
was 8 months pregnant), and her friends Abigail Folger, Wojciech
Frykowski, and Jay Sebring at Tate and husband Roman Polanski's
home in Los Angeles,
Wal-Mart incorporates as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
