CHARACTERS
NICK ADAMS-he sounds amicable, because he
answers without hassle when the killers start giving
him a hard time.
Hes earnest and helpful just look at his
conversation with Ole but he never veers into what
might be considered feminine compassion.

OLE ANDRESON-Ole Andreson is a bit of a let down.

Seeing as two hitmen have come to town for the sole
purposes of gunning him down, we sort of expected
someone tough, intimidating, and dynamic.
MAX AND AL-Max and Al are hardened criminals. Theyre
members of organized crime who have come to Summit
solely for the purposes of tracking down and shooting in
cold blood an ex-prizefighter theyve never met.

GEORGE- he really gets the brunt of the killers

abuse, Hes the kind of guy youd love to have
around during a fire, earthquake, flash flood, or Lost
season finale. Hes just that cool in a crisis.
SAM-Sam is at the extreme opposite from Nick in
terms of getting involved. He doesnt want to be
involved, he doesnt even want to know, and he
doesnt think anyone else should, either.

O P I N I O N A B O U T T H E S T O RY
The Killers is presented to us rather nakedly. Heres
what happens, judge for yourself. The authors
attitude towards the work, then, is basically neutral. If
the reader feels sympathetic, its because the reader is
compassionate, not because the tone encourages
sympathy. This really fits the bill as far as the story
goes; if The Killer is about an encounter with
unadulterated evil, then it should be presented to us in
an unadulterated manner. Or, to put it another way, we
as readers encounter The Killer the same way Nick
Adams encounters the killers.
