Fisheries in Sri Lanka

 Sri Lanka has a 1,760 km coast


line of which 1,150 km are sand
beaches, possessing a shelf area
(up to 120 m depth) of 30, 000
km2 with the declaration of the
Exclusive Economic Zone

are categorized under three broad
types.
 (1) Marine resources.
 (2) Inland resources.
 (3) Brackish water resources.

WHAT IS THE FISHING,
and FISHING LIFE
Fishing is the main industry along the
coastal belt in the Sri Lanka. fishermen,
like their colleagues in other parts of the
island, mostly live in impoverished
conditions.

Society and culture of
fishermen
qSri Lanka is a multi-ethnic and
multi-religious society, in which
each ethnic group represents
predominantly one religious
group.
q The majority of the Sinhalese are
Buddhists, Tamils are Hindus
and, Moors and Malays are
Muslims

Ø The start of the civil war in 1983
completely altered the nature of the
problem, and produced tragic
consequences for the fishermen.
Ø The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE), which had open support from
various political organizations in Tamil
Nadu prior to the Indian Peace
Keeping Force (IPKF) operations (and
even !), was receiving supplies from
the Tamil Nadu coast.

have severely affected them.

Ø Education is seen as a means of enter to
the hazardous occupation of fishing.
Ø Therefore, a less percentage of children in

(school-going age) not attend school.

Ø It is quite obvious that drug
addiction, including addiction to
cigarettes and alcohol.
Ø A considerable number of
children who drop out from
schools include those who have
been subject to drug abuse.
