THE MEDIA
The English are avid Consumers of
mass media, from
newspapers( national and local) and
innumerable magazines to hundreds
of TV and radio stations.

National press

Two types of national newspaper


The UK national daily newspapers are commonly identidied as either
broadsheet or tabloid.

Broadsheet
They are often referred as the quality newspapers.
Such newspapers are established more then 100 years back.*
These newspapers are very expensive.
Read mainly by the highly educated and elite class.
Examples: The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent.
Tabloid
They are often referred as the popular newspapers.
These newspapers have have vast readers.
They are very cheap and are easily available.
It is read mainly by the lower income class, labors and workers.
Examples: The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror.

politics
What The Media do for politics?
Most people get their information on political issues from
the media. Often this can influence peoples opinions.
Positive:
Information(facts, records, statistics, events, policies.
Deliberation (debate, analysis, comment, opinion)
Accountability (investigation, audit, voice for citizen,
campaigns)
Negative:
Lack of resources for (political) journalism
Government secrecy
Government manipulation

Sex and scandals

BBC
The brithish broadcasting corporation is a public service whose
trustees are appointed by the gobernment.
The BBC includes both radio and television stations
The BBC broadcasts :
1)Informative programmes: news, current affairs, religion, etc.
2)Narrative programmes: plays, dramas, tv films, feature films, etc.
3) Entertainment programmes: entertainment, variety, music,
sports, etc.
The most important stations are the national radio networks
operated by the BBC, for exaple: radio 1(chart and urban music),
radio 2( light pop and special music),radio 3( classical music), radio
4 (current affairs and serious speech) radio 5 (rolling news and
sport) all this radios can also be listen digitally ( online or through
digital tv).

television
The UK has a strong tradition of public service broadcasting an
international reputation for creative programme-making.
The BBC Operates 14 differrent televisin channels( including
8 digital channels and 6 nation-wide channels). BBC 1, BBC 2,
BBC 3, BBC 4, CBEEBIES, BBC NEWS 24, BBC PARLIAMENT Etc.
The UK has 3 comercial commercial networks, althroug
commercially- funded this services have the obligation to
provide some public service programming.
The five main channels in Britain are: BBC ONE, BBC TWO,
ITV, 4, CHANNEL 5.
Al channels except channel 4 are obliged by law to be
impartial and neutral in dealing with social and political
affairs.
