Intertextuality

Definition:

The interrelationship between texts, especially


works of literature; the way that similar or
related texts influence, reflect, or differ from
each other
In media intertextuality is used when
bands/artists include references to other famous
themes e.g. a music video may be based around a
famous movie and have the same conventions.

John Stewarts Theory

John Stewart has a theory regarding music videos.


He believes that music videos have the aesthetics
of a TV commercial, using lots of close ups and
the use of light to focus on the stars face. He
believes that music videos frequently come from
sources like fashion, Art and photography. He says
that music videos use elements that the audience
will be familiar with to create a sense of
nostalgia and by giving it a new meaning.

Julia Kristeva is a literary critic,
philosopher, feminist, psychoanalyst and
novelist.

(GTA San Andreas), this instantly attracts their
youthful, pop-rock audience through their
familiarisation of this media.
