Thread is formed by flow of displacement of metal


All materials are suitable for thread rolling
All commonly used threads including trapezoidal and worm
threads can be rolled
The surface finish obtained is in the order of 0.8m
Knurling can be done on a part. Left and right hand threads
can be rolled.
Diameters of upto 25mm and lengths of upto 250mm can be
threaded

Cylindrical Die threading

CYLINDRICAL DIE MACHINES


It consists of two or three rolls with the thread form
ground on their periphery
The thread ground on the rolls correspond to the thread to
be formed in profile,pitch and helix angle
Main application of rolling the thread on taps
Suitable for large sized precision threads

Planetary thread rolling machine

One central rotating die with the thread form ground on its
periphery
One or more concave die segments positioned with a gap
from the periphery of the cylindrical die
The finished size is obtained before it reaches the exit end
High production rates

THREAD MILLING
Cutting of screw threads with a form milling cutter
Both internal and external threads can be milled
Advantages
A fast threads cutting method for producing threads
Threads can be milled close to the shoulder
Worms and lead screws which are too large can be milled
Produces smoother and accurate threads compared to die
threading and tapping

Taper threads can be milled if the machine is provided with a


taper thread attachment
When the job is long or large , this method is efficient

SINGLE RIBBED WHEELS


Used for grinding long and coarse pitch work pieces by
traverse method
Accurate threads can be produced
MULTI RIBBED WHEELS
Two or more parallel grooves
Short length threads and highly repetitive work
Width of the grinding wheel more than or equal to
the width of the thread to be ground

The wheel is fed into the work to the required depth and
moves axially a distance equal to the pitch of the thread
Employed when production is more important than
accuracy
