Alexander Calder, August 22 1898 November 11
1976was an American sculptor. Calder was born into
a family of artists. His grandfather, father and mother
all being artists. Hisparents didnt want Calder to
have to life the struggle of an artists life so they
made him initially study mechanical engineering,
which Calderinitially had minimal interest in. He later
graduated from Stevens university in 1919. After
working various jobs from a hydraulic engineer to a
draughtsman. He later moved to New York and
enrolled in the Arts Student League. Thiswas where
his artistic work started. Calder is most known for his
sculptures in which he used mechanics and motors to
allow them to move. These would later be known as
mobiles. Calder was the original creator of mobiles
using delicate balancing ofobjects and motors to
allow the movement of his sculptures.
