CHARACTERISTICS

Voluntary Membership:
Members coming together voluntarily;
By choice, not by force;
Continues for as long as he likes;
May leave at his will by rendering proper

notice.

Separate Identity:
An institute registered under Co-operative

Societies Act;
Separate legal entity;
Limited liability of its members;
Continuity of its existence remains unaffected
in-spite of entry or exit of its members.

Voting per Member:


Each member has right for only one vote;
Quantum of share ownership has no

significance as far as voting right is


concerned;
Only one vote can be cast even by a shareholder having large number of shares.

Service Purpose:
Main motive is to serve the members;
Profit motive is subsidiary;
Purpose:
Economic upliftment of members
Protect members from exploitation.

Easy Incorporation:
Incorporation is easier than that of a

company;
10 or more persons collectively can register a
Co-operative Society;
Voluntarily forming an association;
Registered with the Registrar of Co-operative
Societies;
By doing this, it gets its own identity.
