INTRODUCTION

This project is helpful to increase the heat

Transfer rate due to increase in HT
coefficient (h) while other parameters are
kept constant.
Generation of Corona Wind by the
application of Electro Hydro Dynamic
Technique(EHD)
in
a
concentric
cylindrical geometry.

EHD???

Electrohydrodynamics (EHD), also known as Electrofluid-dynamics (EFD) or Electrokinetics.

Study of motion of electrically charged particles of fluids.

Study of motion of ionized particles or molecules and

their interactions with surrounding fluid.

The phenomena is related to conversion of electrical

energy into kinetic energy, and vice versa.

Effect Of Electric Field

In our project we are comparing
the rate of heat transfer without using
electric field & by using electric fieid.
Radial corona wind is generated
when high electric field is applied.
The laminar motion of the fluid
changes into turbulent motion & the
rate of heat transfer increases.

Manufacturing Steps(for Cylinder Only)

1). Drilling holes on metal sheet
2). Rolling
3). Brazing
4). Finishing

1. Installation of cylinder
The standard dimension inner
cylinder is placed inside
manufactured cylinder (outer)
whose length is greater to
prevent short circuit.

2. Insertion of Pins
Pins are inserted through that
holes. These pins helps to
increase emf by reducing the
distance between two cylinders.
Since, E = -dv/dr

3.Filling of Plaster of Paris

POP in powder form is filled
inside the inner cylinder, this
powder help to maintain the
uniform temperature
throughout.

4.Fitting of Heating Coil in Bakelite

Heating coil is used to heat the
inner cylinder fitted in bakelite
and poured inside the POP
powder.
Bakelite is used as insulator and
have the capability to resist high
temperature.

5. Fitting of Bakelite
The Bakelite is designed in
such a way that so as to fit
easily to the upper part of
the inner cylinder.

6. Use of Thermocouples

5 thermocouples of type PT-100 made of

Copper Constantan material are used to
measure:
1. Fluid temperature
2. Temperature around coil
3. Inner cylinder temperature

4. Outer cylinder temperature

Insulation
After installation the outer surface of outer cylinder
is coated by paste of POP as insulator.

Power Supply
1). Source = AC of 440 V to coil
2). DC of 230 V between tip of pins and inner
cylinder, stepped up to 1000K V.

Physical quantities affecting h

Dynamic viscosity ()
Density ()
Thermal conductivity(k)
Specific heat (Cp)
Acceleration due to gravity (g)
Coefficient of expansion()
Temperature Difference (T)
The geometrical parameters Di and Do

The electric field (E) depends on

Voltage (V)
Length of pin (L)
Potential difference
Distance between the tips of the fins and
the inner tube respectively.
Pitch (P) of the cross- section of the pins.
Circumferential distance S, between the
consecutive pins.
Hence h depends upon V, L, P and S.

Execution of experiment
The observations were recorded during the execution of experimentation
with two heat transfer media viz.
1). Air
2). Transformer Oil(unused)

The heat input to the system can be given as

Q = h A T
The heat input to the system can also be given as
Q = V X I (with 20% losses as the experimental set up is not
calibrated)

Therefore, Q = h A T = V X I
h = (V X I)/ (A T)
Thus the heat transfer coefficient, h could be calculated.

Advantages

Although high voltage is applied, power

consumed by EHD technique is small.
Enhanced h is more than other active
techniques.
Installation and maintainance is simple.
Controllable.
Chemically non-reactive.

Disadvantages

High DC voltage applied, so extra precautions

are necessary.

Expensive due to materials of Beryllium copper.

Heavy in weight.

Electric field generation around the apparatus.

Applications

In designing compact and efficient heat

exchangers.
It is of great help in aero-propulsion work
i.e. in aircraft industry.
In reducing the frost formation at the heat
transfer surface and to enhance heat transfer.
Energy conversion, refrigeration, power, and
process industries, can lead to reduced costs
and environmental emissions.etc

Conclusions

As voltage increses heat transfer rate increases

as HT co-efficient h increased.

The designed set up is completed successfully.

Pins play an important role for power saving.

Experiment with different fluid has been done.
