know about amines?

What do you know

about the classification
of amine compounds?

Give the name of these

compounds bellow!

Pre-Test...

This test is designed to

explore how far you know
about amine compound

What are amines?

What
are
amines?

Amines are organic compounds and

functional groups that contain a basic
nitrogen atom with lone pair

Amines are derivatives of ammonia,

where in one or more hydrogen atoms
have been replaced by a substituent
such as an alkyl or aryl group
Compounds with the nitrogen atom
attached to a carbonyl of the structure
RCONRR are called amides and have
different chemical properties from
amines

Examples of amines

Aniline

Amphetamine

N-Methylaniline

Ammonia

Ammonia or azane is a
compound of nitrogen and
hydrogen with formula NH3

It is a colourless gas with a

characteristic pungent
smell

Ammonium ion

The ammonium cation is a

positively charged polyatomic ion
with the chemical formula NH4+

It is formed by the protonation of

ammonia (NH3)

The classes of
amines

Primary amines
In primary amines, only one of
the hydrogen atoms in the
ammonia molecule has been
replaced
That means that the formula of
the primary amine will be RNH2
where "R" is an alkylor aryl
group

Secondary amines

In a secondary amine,
two of the hydrogens
in an ammonia
molecule have been
replaced by
hydrocarbon groups.

Tertiary amines

In a tertiary amine,
all of the hydrogens
in an ammonia
molecule have been
replaced by
hydrocarbon groups

Nomenclature of
amine compound

Primary amines can be named by

replacing the -e of the parent group with
the word amine
NH2
|

CH3-CH-CH3

propana
emine

4-methyl 2-penthanamine

Secondary amines can be named by

replacing the -e of the parent group with
the word amine and then using an upper
case N to designate that the second alkyl
group is on the nitrogen atom

N-methyl 1-propanamine

Tertiary amines can be named in the

same way as secondary amines

N,N-dimethylethanamine

N-ethil N-methyl 2-pentanamine

Ammonium salt - named by naming the

positive ion first and then naming the
negative ion

Tetramethylammonium bromide

If the priority of amine is lower than the

other functional group, name amino- as
the substituent

1-aminoethanol

2-aminoethanol
