Photosynthesis

BY OM ADITYA,
CLASS- VII-C,

What is
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesisis the process used by plants, algae
and certain bacteria to harness energy

from sunlight

into chemical energy.

Photosynthetic Reaction

Chemically we can write the photosynthesis

process bySUN
photons

6CO2

6H2O

C6H12O6

glucose

6O2

Requirements for Photosynthesis

External Factors

Sunlight

Temperature

Carbon Dioxide

Water

Internal Factors

Enzymes

Chlorophyll

Site of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of the plant.

LEAVES
FEATURES OF LEAVES
Large surface area

To absorb more light

Thin

Short distance for carbon

dioxide to diffuse into
leaf cells

Chlorophyll

Absorbs sunlight to
transfer energy into
chemicals

Network of veins

To support the leaf and

transport water and
carbohydrates

Stomata

Allow carbon dioxide to

diffuse into the leaf

Stomata

Pores in a plants cuticle through which water and gases are

exchanged between the plant and the atmosphere.

Oxygen
(O2)

Carbon Dioxide
(CO2)

Chlorophyll

What is Chlorophyll ?

Chlorophyllis the molecule that is present in leaves which

absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesise
carbohydrates from
CO2and water.

Why are leaves green ?

The leaves are green due to the presence of the pigmentchlorophyll.
It helps the leaves to capture solar energy. This energy is used to
prepare food from carbon dioxide and water.

Why is Photosynthesis important?

It provides us oxygen, the most important gas which we use for

breathing

It helps to reduce the percentage of carbon di-oxide in the atmosphere

Green plants mostly are the bases of all food chains, so without them
the food chain is not possible. The green plants get their food through
photosynthesis. So, indirectly we are dependent on photosynthesis.
