Safety
Corrosion:
The process involving the deterioration of substance, usually a
metal or its properties because of a reaction with its environment.
Corrosion is the reverse process of steel
manufacturing
Type of Corrosion
1) General Corrosion
Corrosion
2)Localized
a)Pitting Corrosion
b)Crevice Corrosion

Environmental testing:
This include the environmental condition for surface treatment like
minimum surface temperature for coating application is usually 5C
and maximum
is typically 50C.

Coating fundamentals:
The fundamental properties of coating exhibits: Chemical
resistance, Water resistance, Ease of application, Adhesion of
substrate, Cohesive strength, Flexibility, Elongation, Impact resistance,
Abrasion resistance, Temperature resistance etc..
Coating classified as Organic & Inorganic coatings
Surface Preparation:
The initial surface cleaning and preparation is the key step to the
success of the coating system.
It has been estimated that approximately 75% of all premature
coating failures are caused either completely or in part by inadequate
or improper surface preparation.
Surface Defects on steel shall also be do to Design defects and
Fabrication defects.
Surface preparation grouped into two methods:
1)Non Abrasive Blast Cleaning
a)Solvent Cleaning
b)Hand Tool Cleaning
c)Power Tool Cleaning
d)Pickling
2)Abrasive Blast Cleaning
a)Manual Abrasive Blast Cleaning
b)M/c Operated Abrasive Blast Cleaning
Blotter Test
The compressed air must be clean
,otherwise the blasting will introduce
fresh contaminants as the old
contaminants are removed.
Contaminants to check the
compressed air
1) Dirt
2) Oil (mist or droplets)
3) Moisture (mist or droplets)
Each and all of these can cause
coating failure.
Rust grades
Shot abrasives
Grit abrasives
Coating Application:
Weather conditions: RH <85% & Surface temperature min 3C >Dew
point
temperature.
Mixing : Mixing in coatings requires precision & care to achieve the
expected self life.
Applying the coating: Using Brush, Roller, Conventional spray,
Airless spray.

Spray tips slide into a hole in the front of the gun. Theyre labeled with a three-digit
number like 309 or 517 (these may be the last three digits of a longer model number).
Doubling the first digit tells you the spray fan width with the gun held 12 in. from the
surface. A 415 tip, for example, would have an 8-in.-wide fan, while a 515 would
have a 10-in. fan pattern
