What is a Social Business?

 A business that measures success in terms of


doing social good – is totally dedicated to solving
social and environmental problems.
 Once a social business is making a profit, it
returns the original investment to the original
investors without interest or dividend and pours all
of its profits back into expanding the business to
make a positive difference in the world.
Purpose

 To achieve the social objective, such as,


healthcare for the poor, housing for the poor,
financial services for the poor, nutrition for
malnourished children, providing safe drinking
water, introducing renewable energy, etc. in a
business way.
Types
 Type I: focuses on business’ dealing with social
objectives only.

 Type II: can take up any profitable business so long


as it is owned by the poor and the disadvantaged,
who can gain through receiving direct dividends or by
some indirect benefits.
The Ultimate Capitalistic Program

 It does not require government funding

 It is self-sustaining, creates jobs, increases taxes paid

 It brings out the best in people

 It helps individuals improve their economic condition and


to escape poverty.
 The competition is to provide better services to the society.

The Grameen Bank
 Founded by Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi
economist.
 In 1976, he discovered that very small loans
could make a disproportionate difference to a
poor person.
Muhammad Yunus
 Started his pilot project on 1st October 1983,
named Grameen Bank.
Which resulted in organizations
such as

 Grameen Motsho
 Grameen Krishi
 Grameen Trust
 Grameen Fund
 Grameen Software Ltd.
 Grameen Cybernet Ltd.
 Grameen Telecom, etc..
Nobel Peace Prize 2006

Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace


Prize 2006 along with the Grameen Bank for
their efforts to create economic and social
development.
Conclusion
 With the Social Business taking off, the world of
free market capitalism will never be the same
again, and it then will really be able to deliver a
deathblow on global poverty.

slavery, and we got rid of apartheid –
everyone thought each one of them was
impossible. Let’s take the next impossible,
do it with joy and get it finished with and
