Science: Earth

Presented by: Group

What we know:
The composition of the
earth's interior consists of
the crust, mantle, outer
core, and the inner core.
The outer core is liquid.
Mohorovicic Discontinuity,
or "Moho", is the boundary
between the crust and the
mantle.

More than 90% on the crust

is composed of silicate materials.
These layers can be defined by
either their chemical or their
rheological properties. Earth has an
outer silicate solid crust,
a highly viscous mantle, a liquid
outer core that is much less viscous
than the mantle, and a solid inner
core.

What we want to know:

Different kinds of rocks:

Sedimentary,
Metamorphic and
Igneous

Depth
of the
Earth's layers

What we have learned:

Divergent Plate Boundary
A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving
away from each other and a new crust is formed
from magma that rises to the Earth's surface
between the two plates
Convergent Plate Boundary
is an actively deforming region where two (or more)
tectonic plates or fragments of the lithosphere move
toward one another and collide.

Transform Boundary

are places where plates slide sideways past

each other. At transform boundaries
lithosphere is neither created nor destroyed.

Lithosphere

is the rigid, outermost shell of a

terrestrial-type planet or natural
satellite that is defined by its rigid
mechanical properties.

Oceanic lithosphere, which is

associated with oceanic crust and
exists in the ocean basins

Continental lithosphere, which

is associated with continental crust

Different kinds of rocks

Igneous Rocks
are formed when magma
(molten rock deep within
the
earth) cools and hardens

Metamorphic Rocks
have been modified by
heat,
pressure, and chemical
processes, usually while
buried.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed by

the accumulation of sediments.
