    Arteries, veins and capillaries differ in both their structure and function. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to tissues, have thick elastic walls, and transport blood under high pressure. Veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart, have thin walls and one-way valves to prevent backflow. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels where nutrients and waste are exchanged between blood and body tissues through a single layer of endothelial cells.
