A Resume is not a CV
A CV is a detailed, lengthy and
structured outline of ones educational
background, publications, projects,
awards and work history
A CV is running up to 20 pages
A CV is used by educators and
scientists boasting extensive academic
and professional credentials seeking
positions in education or research

Purpose of a resume
Impress a potential employer and get
you an interview
Forces you to gather and clarify selfinformation
Lets you present yourself in the most
favorable way

o A career objective may be included in the
resume.
o The request for a cover letter usually
depends on the prospective employer.
Prepare one just in case.

Work history or education?


o It depends. Find out which will be more
impressive to a potential employer.

o You can abbreviate your degree since most
are familiar with the common ones (ex. B.A.,
B.S., M.A. M.S., and Ph.D.)
o Degree or diploma, Major field of study
Name and location of educational
institution
o Begin with your highest degree
o Elementary and high school may or may not
be included

o Job or position title
o Employer name and location (exact
address is not necessary)

o Brief duties and responsibilities
