PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

BY BRITTNI SHOUP-OWENS

THE NATURE OF LEARNERS

Put students (the learners) at

the center of learning

Learning can be a social event
Emotions play a big role in

learning
Not all students learn the same

way

Dont lower standards

for any student

Use Summative &

Formative Assessments
to ensure students are
learning
Connections matter!

THE FUNCTION OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS

& WHY THEYRE IMPORTANT
Function of Public Schools
Provide free education
Provide equal opportunities
Integrate diversity
Prepare students for college, life, and the
workforce
Help students achieve their full potential

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Without schools, none of us would be
where we are today, whether its in this
classroom, at a job, or simply sitting at
home. Schools teach dont just teach us
the ABCs and 123s, they teach us how
to think for ourselves, how to form
friendships, communicate with others,
problem solve, and how to take on the
real world.

ENGLISH EDUCATION: ACTIVITIES & READINGS

Some activities I plan to do with
my students are:
Class Discussions
Presentations
Role play with stories
English related computer

games/activities
Mad Libs or a Class-Wide Story
A modified version of the game,
Speak Out!

Some of the readings I would like to

include in my classroom are:
The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne

Frank
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
Hunger Games (if allowed) by

Suzanne Collins
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton
Harry Potter (would be my dream to

teach)

CLASS ENVIRONMENT

Open, but not too open
Importance

TECHNOLOGY
Technology is, and will only continue to be a huge part in our

future classrooms. However, there is both benefits and

disadvantages of having it involved in the curriculum. Some
ways Ill integrate it in my classroom are:
Creating PowerPoints for the lesson or for help sessions
Have the students make videos for homework assignments or

presentations
Letting the students do their homework in Word or having them post
homework on a designated website (like D2L)
Allowing iPods, Kindles, etc. during designated times

WHAT IS MY ROLE AS A TEACHER?

Design the Curriculum
Help students & be involved

Communicate with students,

parents, other faculty

members, and the
community

Assign & correct homework,

papers, projects, and

readings
Create Summative &

Formative Assessments

Make lesson plans and back-

up lesson plans
Impact students lives
