Two main traditions:

Hindustani - northern India


Carnatic - southern India

is not notated, but taught from


master to pupil by listening and playing.

Common Elements
Can

often be very complex, but there


are three common elements:

Melody usually improvised from a type


of scale called a rag.
Drone accompaniment using only two
notes, a fifth apart.
Rhythm known as the tala, and
organised into repeating cycles.
