Fortunato and I both were

members of very old and
important Italian families. We
used to play together when we
were children.Fortunato was
bigger,
richer
and
more
handsome than I was. And he
enjoyed making me look like a
fool. He hurt my feelings a
thousand times during the
years of my childhood. I never
showed my anger, however.

So, he thought we were good

friends. But I promised myself that
one day I would punish Fortunato
for his insults to me.Many years
passed. Fortunato married a rich
and beautiful woman who gave him
sons. Deep in my heart I hated him,
but I never said or did anything that
showed him how I really felt. When
I smiled at him, he thought it was
because
we
were
friends.
He did not know it was the thought
of his death that made me smile.

CHARACTERS:
Montresor- is the narrator and a wealthy man intent on
receiving revenge on Fortunato who is both a friend sworn
enemy of Montresor's. He has planned to punish with
impunity.
Fortunato- is a respected and feared man and a proud
connoisseur of fine wine, but he is also is singleminded.

CONFLICT:
MAN VS. MAN
Montressor wants to revenge to Fortunato

PLOT:
1. Montresor, tells the story of the day that he took his
revenge on Fortunato a fellow nobleman. Angry over
numerous injuries and some insult, he plots to murder
his friend during Carnival .
2. Montresor lures Fortunato into a private wine-tasting
excursion by telling him he has obtained a pipe of what
he believes to be a rare vintage of Amontillado.
3. Fortunato enters drunk and unsuspecting and
therefore, does not resist as Montresor quickly chains
him to the wall.
4. Montresor reveals brick and mortar, previously hidden
among the bones nearby, and walls up the niche,
entombing his friend alive.
5. Before placing the last stone, he drops a burning torch
through the gap. He claims that he feels sick at heart,
but dismisses this reaction as an effect of the
dampness of the catacomb.

THEME:
"The Cask of Amontillado" is a powerful tale
of revenge. Montresor, the narrator of this tale,
pledges revenge upon Fortunato for an insult.
