Compare & Order Decimals

Order 3.47, 2.26, 3.75

Use a number line
2.26

3.47

2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 2.6 2.7 2.8 2.9 3

2.26 < 3.47

3.75

3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 3.7 3.8 3.9 4

2.26 < 3.75

Copyright Ed2Net Learning, Inc.

3.47 < 3.75

11

Compare & Order Decimals

Order 3.47, 2.26, 3.75

Use Place Value

Step 1
Line up the decimal
points. Compare the
greatest place first.
3.47
2.26
3.75

Step 2
Compare the next
greatest place.

Step 3
Order the decimals
from least to
greatest.

3.47
3.75

2.26, 3.47, 3.75

Think: 2 < 3

Think: 4 < 7

So, 2.26 is the least.

So, 3.47 < 3.75.

12

Add Decimals

Use models
Add 0.5 + 0.7

0.5

First shade one

addend.
Then shade the
next addend.
Find the total.
So, 0.5 + 0.7 =
1.2
Copyright Ed2Net Learning, Inc.

0.7

= 1.2

Start shading the second

addend right after the first
addend.
13

Add Decimals

You can also add decimals greater than 1.

Add 1.18 + 1.23

First shade one addend.

Then shade the next addend.
Find the total.
So, 1.18 + 1.23 = 2.41
1.18

1.23

= 2.41

14

Add Decimals

Use Place Value

Example: Add 0.5 + 0.9
Step 1: Line up the decimal points. Add the
tenths as you would do the whole numbers.
Regroup if necessary.
1

0.5
+ 0.9

15

Add Decimals

Step 2: Add the ones next. Write the

decimal point in the sum.
1

0.5
+ 0.9
1.4
So, 0.5 + 0.9 = 1.4

16

Subtract Decimals

Use models
Subtract 1.2 0.5

First shade 1.2

Then take away
0.5
Find how many
are left.
So, 1.2 - 0.5 = 0.7

17

Subtract Decimals

Use models to
subtract decimals
with hundredths
Subtract 0.68 0.15

First shade 0.68

Then take away 0.15
Find how many are left.
So, 0.68 0.15 = 0.53

18

Subtract Decimals

Use Place Value

Example: 1.12 0.35
Step 1: Line up the decimal points. Subtract
the hundredths first. Regroup if needed.
