to identify a procedure for the
detection of fire by person(s)

Describe the duties for a fire watch
Recognize how to prevent and extinguish fires
Explain the steps for monitoring hot work
Describe fire fighting procedures
Outline personal protective equipment

safety

We are all responsible for fire safety

This includes client, contractors,

sub contractor & visitors

We must all act in a fire safe
manner
Think how what we are doing and
how we are doing it could affect fire
safety (Risk Assessment?!)
Line managers etc have additional
responsibilities
Site Fire Coordinators (SFC) have a
central fire safety role in each Area

DEFINITIONS
What is fire?
Fire - Produced when a substance undergoes rapid oxidation involving heat
and light.
Fire Triangle Shows the three elements needed to produce and sustain a
fire.
Flash Point The lowest temperature to which a substance must be heated
in order for the substance to give off vapors which will burn when exposed
to a flame or ignition source.
Point of Origin The location where the fire started.
Burn patterns Noticeable patterns created by the fire as it burns.
Accelerants Substances, such as gasoline, paint thinner, and alcohol, that
accelerate the burning process.

How to control the fire?

Fire is a process of three factors reacts in availability of
ignition.
Methods of fire control may be classified under following
1)Starvation :
Removal of fuel
2)Smothering:
Limitation of oxygen
3)Cooling:
Removal or limitation of heat

Extinguisher selection
Unfortunately its not possible to make a
common fire extinguisher

Therefore its
important to identify
the class of fire
before use of any
extinguisher medium

Extinguisher selection
Water
Water is universally used as a cooling agent as it is
readily available

Extinguisher selection
Foam
Foam type extinguishers extinguishes
the fire by smothering and cooling the
fuel. It prevents the re-ignition through
the formation of combustible mixtures
of vepours and air.
Best for B type fire & can be used for
type A

Extinguisher selection
Dry Powder
Dry powder type extinguishers are the
most effective fire fighting media it
extinguish the fire falling liquids and fuel
spill fires.
Can be use for all type fire

Extinguisher selection
CO2
Carbon dioxide type fire
extinguishers are most effective for
live electrical fires.
It can be used for type B

Fire watchers are essential to help all the projects
having hot work for fire safety management.
In a fire alarm / real fire people sometimes do
