The Imperialism of Japan

By Khira, Katy,
Jose, Amanda,
and Tim

Who
Before the Meiji Restoration,
Japan was a very cultural and
traditional land. Even after the
Meiji Restoration, Japan continued
to retain its traditional values.
Korea was largely influenced by
China before it was imperialized
by Japan. Its cultural values and
politics were manipulated by
China.

Where/When

Japan
Korea
Manchuria(North-East China)
Taiwan

Where/When
1859-Commodore Matthew Perry opened
Japan to trade with foreign nations
1868- Emperor Mutsushito restored to
throne, started Meiji Restoration
1894-1895- Sino-Japanese War
(Sino=Chinese)
1904-1905-Russo-Japanese War
1905- Treaty of Portsmouth
1939-WWII starts
1940-Announced Greater East Asia CoProsperity Sphere plans

What
Japan used military force and power to
pressure Korea into signing treaties that
favored Japan, such as the Japan-Korea Treaty
of Amity. This treaty opened Korea for trading
to Japan, much like the US opened trade to
Japan. Upon winning the Russo-Japanese war,
Japan signed a treaty annexing Korea.
Japan also used the Japan is Best method,
imprinting Japanese culture in Korea, the
Japanese education system, modified
monuments, and other things to show that
Japan is better.

Why

Natural resources-Rice and a little iron ore in

Korea; sugar cane in Taiwan for food; lumber,
iron, coal, soybeans, and salt in Manchuria
Trading rights on mainland Asia in Chinese
port cities

and to live on. Japan was very densely
populated at the time
Overseas markets
Wanted to rid Asia of European imperialism
Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere
contributed to the industrial needs of the
Japanese war machine

How (did the colonizers

interact with the native
Foreign tradepopulation)
was prohibited, which lead to a

worse economic state

Some modernization efforts were made
(electricity, cars, water, telephone)
Education was restricted (primary school
only)
Almost all industries were Japanese-based or
owned, Koreans were charged interest rates
25 percent higher
Japanese settlers took land, because many
Koreans didnt have written proof of
ownership

How (did the colonizers

interact with the native
population)
Koreans worked
in mines and

factories in Korea, some were moved

to Japan due to labor shortages
because of WWII
60,000 Koreans died from harsh
treatment and work conditions
Many Koreans were executed, raped,
and starved
Some were experimented on

How (was the native

population affected)
About 800,000 Koreans had
immigrated to Japan
Cultural suppression led to a loss of
culture
Many public monuments were
changed to change their meanings
Some Koreans took Japanese names
and spoke Japanese
Some modernization
