How do directors use

cinematography, mise en scene and

editing to establish the character of
Jesse James?
By Maeve Heywood.

Wide shot/angle to show

the contrast between the
background setting and
character. The character is
shown as a mysterious
silhouette whereas the
setting is serene and
idealistic.
Lighting of the sky shows a
sunset, orange and grey
colour palette could indicate
warning and bleakness .

This shot shows no balance,

which, as a result may
make the audience feel
uncomfortable and show
tension within the scene.

Despite the character not

being the centre of focus in
this shot, he is still at eye
level of the audience,
maintaining their attention
and focus.

The character is
looking off into the
horizon, which may be
a symbol of looking
him into his future, due
to the orange colour
palette this may be
warning him of danger
ahead.

be the
result of this effect being used,
however it also shows the
characters being the centre of
focus for the viewers/audience.

The unfocused lens

round the side of
the shot, may
indicate that this
scene as of the
past of the
character and is no
longer relevant.

The low angle shows the

significance and importance
of their relationship.
The fact the main character is
holding the child on his
shoulders shows their physical
and emotional connection. This
may suggest their relationship

The natural background of the trees with

Suggesting the characters state of mind
in this scene.

The fact the character is

a darkened silhouette
and his face nor his
costume is visible, he
may be suggested as a
mysterious character.

The wide angle shows the vast

scale of the fire showing the
danger is unavoidable and
immovable and much more
powerful than the character
himself.

The fire is eye

level with the
viewers, making it
the obvious centre
of focus.
The vibrant

background. This
may suggest
conflict and

character in this
moment of the
film. This may

the contrast between the
peaceful setting and his
worry and unsettlement

The characters eyes are focused elsewhere

representing an unknown danger. This may
also suggest unsettlement, which may make
the audience feel uncomfortable as the
characters eye line is focused away from
them/the screen. The character is frowning
which may represent this further.
