5 RISK MANAGEMENT OF CYANIDE USE
OVERVIEW
Cyanide Management is one of 14 themes in the Leading Practice
Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry.
The program aims to identify the key issues affecting sustainable
development in the mining industry
to provide information and practical case studies that identify
sustainable approaches for the industry.
CYANIDE MANAGEMENT
The key to leading practice cyanide management is to assess risks as early as
possible, including environmental, human health, economic and reputational.
The evidence of the adverse effect on industry reputation is demonstrated in the
origins of the Codes development by the United Nations Environment Program
(UNEP)
Mining companies that adopt the Code may
improved protection of wildlife
improved relations with both the public and regulatory agencies
improved economic and environmental performance
reduced risks and liabilities
improved access to capital and potentially lower insurance costs.
CURRENT SITUATION
Managing cyanide to minimise risks
to human and environmental health
represents one of the key challenges
that continues to face the mining
industry
In order to assist the global mining
industry to improve its management
of cyanide
the Code was developed by a multi
stakeholder steering committee and
is
today
managed
by
the
International Cyanide Management
Institute (ICMI 2006) to provide a
risk-based management process by
which the mining industry is able to
implement and demonstrate that it
can meet leading practice for
cyanide management.
KEY STATEMENT
Oricas Yarwun facility
commenced operations in 1989
located about eight kilometres by road from Gladstone,
Queensland
Producer of cyanide that can be package in three ways
with each product having its own particular application
1. sparge-solid cyanide briquettes
2. IBC-solid cyanide briquettes
3. ISO tank containers for liquid cyanide

ELIMINATING HAZARDS THROUGH COLLABORATION
The Beaconsfield Gold Mine that is located in north east region
of Tasmania approached Oricas Yarwun facility to assist in
improving the safe handling of cyanide at its facility.
Beaconsfield Gold Mine was using a typical box mixing facility
at the time.
Oricas experienced technical team should worked with the
management of Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Australia to help
eliminate the hazards of mixing and using cyanide on-site.
Job safety analysis was conducted to identify the health and
safety hazards on the cyanide mixing procedure.
Orica Mini-Sparge cyanide mixing process was identified as a
key component of achieving this goal.
