Myositis Ossificans

What is it?
A

condition that causes abnormal


bone formation within deep muscle
tissue due to deep tissue bleeding

Victims
Athletes
Young

adults in their 20s and 30s


People who have recently experienced
trauma to a bone
More common in males
than females

Symptoms
Pain

in the muscle
Significant bruising
Restricted range of movement in
affected area
Hard lump may be felt deep in the
muscle

Diagnosis
Patient

description: bruising,
swelling, lack of sleep due to pain
Imaging: x-rays
Lab tests: Examination blood
work, electrophysiology, and
muscle tissue from biopsy
Physical observation: extensive
bruising, hematoma, stiffness of
affected area

Treatments
Standard

of Care: immobilization of
affected muscle- keeping it in a
lengthened position for 24 hours while
taking OTC anti inflammatories
Symptom management: 2-3 days of
rest, ice, a compression wrap, and anti
inflammatory drugs
Alternative: local injections of
magnesium sulfate into calcified areas

Prognosis
Short

Term: with the right treatment


and regular check ups with physician,
people should be able to regain muscle
strength
Long Term: if left untreated, limbs
may become paralyzed or
permanently damaged leaving the
patients needing a cane or requiring a
wheelchair
