NATIONAL FESTIVALS

National festivals are those festivals which


are celebrated by the whole nation.
SOME NATIONAL FESTIVALS ARERepublic Day
Independence Day

INDEPENDENCE DAY

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15 each year.


India became an independent nation on August 15, 1947, so
a gazetted holiday is held annually to remember this date.

The president delivers the '"Address to the Nation" on the


eve of Independence Day. India's prime minister unfurls
India's flag and holds a speech at the Red Fort in Old Dehli.
Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs are held in
the state capitals and often involve many schools and
organizations.

REPUBLIC DAY

People throughout India celebrate the nation's Republic Day, which


is a gazetted holiday on January 26 each year. It is a day to
remember when India's constitution came into force on January 26,
1950 , completing the country's transition toward becoming an
independent republic.

A grand parade is held in New Delhi and the event starts with
India's prime minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at
India Gate, to remember soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their
country. India's president takes the military salute during the
parade in New Delhi while state governors take the military salutes
in state capitals. A foreign head of state is the president's chief
guest on Republic Day.

RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS
India is a land of many religions.
So we have many religious festivals that are
celebrated with jay across the country.

DIWALI

Diwali is known as festival of lights.

It is celebrated because on this day lord


Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of
exile.

DUSSEHRA

This festival is celebrated as the day on


which lord Rama killed Ravana.

It is also known as Vijaydashmi.

CHRISTMAS

Christmas is an annual commemoration


ofthe birthofJesus Christand a widely
observed culturalholiday celebrated
generally on December 25th by millions of
peoplearound the world.

HARVEST FESTIVALS
Aharvest festivalis an annual celebration
that occurs around the time of the
mainharvest of a given region and in India
we have many of them.
SOME HARVEST FESTIVALS OF INDIA ARE Onam
Biasakhi

ONAM
Onamis

a Hindu festival celebrated by the

people ofKerala.

It is also thestate festivalof Kerala Onam


Festival falls during the Malayalam month of
Chingam and marks the commemoration
ofVamanaand the subsequent homecoming
of mythical KingMahabali.

BAISAKHI

Vaisakhi,also known asBaisakhi,Vaishakhi,


is a festival celebrated across the northern
Indian subcontinent, especially in thePunjab
Regionby theSikhcommunity.
