Prior Knowledge
Basic Knowledge of Circle
Perpendicular Bisector

The Aim
To teach the students that when the diameter of a circle
is perpendicular to the chord, it bisects the chord.

Introduction
Some questions will be asked to check if the students know.
Q. What is a circle?
R. A circle is a set of all points in plane which are equidistant
from a fixed point of the plane.
Q. What is radial segment ?
R. The segment that joins the centre to any point on the
circle is know as Radial segment.
Q. What

be called?

A. It is radius of given circle.

mOP

Q.

In the figure what is the difference

between PQ and LM
.

A.

PQ and LM both are the chords of

circle but LM is the biggest chord
i.e. diameter of circle.

Q.

What is perpendicular bisector?

R.

A line which divides the line segment into two equal

parts and making the angle of 900.
With the help of the terms mentioned above we are
going to prove a property of circle.

Development:
Core Concept:
Bisection of chord by diameter.

DLO:
The students shall be able to prove that diameter of a
circle will bisect the chord if it is perpendicular to the
chord.

Treatment & Procedure:

Figure will be sketched and following questions will
be asked :

Q.
A.
Q.
A.

In the above figure which one is diameter

RQ is the diameter
What is the relationship between RQ and PT
RQ is perpendicular to PT (chord) at S.
7

Given: is RQ
the diameter of a circle with centre O the diameter
perpendicular
to the chord at S.PT
RQ

is

Q. If PT is bisected by RQ at S. than According to the figure what

are the two bisected parts of PT.
R.

and ST are two bisected parts.

PS

To Prove : PS ST
Now join P and T to O in Figure then what PO& TO be called ?
A. They are radii of the circle.
Construction: Join O to P and T
Q. Which types of triangle we got?
R. Two right angled triangle i-e

OSP and OST

8

Q. Which postulates are used for proving any two triangles to be

congruent to each other.
A. S.S.S
Postulate.
A. S.A.S
Postulate.
A. A.S.A
Postulate.
A. H.S
Postulate (for right triangle)
Q. If I ask you to take the correspondence of these triangles
Present in the figure which denotation is used?
A.

OSP OST

Q. Name the right angles in both right triangles.

R. OSP and OST
Q. Are they congruent?
R.

Yes, OSP = OST (each is a right angle)

Q. Is OP OT and why?
R.

Yes, OP OT because they are the radii of same circle.

Q. Are there any other sides which are taken to be congruent?

A. As OS is common side of both triangles. So, OS OS .
A. As triangles are right triangles and the hypotenuse and one side
of one triangle are congruent to hypotenuse and one side of
corresponding triangle So, OSP OST.
Q. Which postulate we used here for proving triangles to
congruent?
A. H.S. postulate.
Q. Can we take PS ST if yes then why?
A. Yes, PS ST as they are corresponding sides of congruent
triangle.

Now we plot all these results in our Proof.

Proof :

Whenever the diameter of a circle is

perpendicular to the chord,
it bisects the chord.

Board Summary

Basic concepts related to the circle

Related Question linked to the Property of circle

which has to be proved.

Elements of the theorems has been discussed.

13

Recapitulation:

The main points of the topic will be revised.

Invite students to ask questions. So, that any query

in their minds could be removed.

14

Consolidation
Q. In the Figure if AB = 10cm
then m AC =?

m BC =?
Q. AB be called as?
Q. Is radius a chord , if no then why?

15

Homework
According to the figure Prove that if
diameter of a circle is perpendicular to
the chord it bisects the chord.

16

Conclusion

Today we have discussed that diameter bisects

the chord.

Tomorrow Inshallah we will discuss another

postulate of circle.
