What is Circle?
A Circle is the set of all points in plane which are equidistant from a fixed point
of the plane.
What is Semicircle?
The portion of the circle intercept by any central chord is a semi circle.
What is minor arc?
An arc which is included in a semicircle is called minor arc.

AB minor arc
What is major arc of a circle?
An arc which includes a semicircle is called major arc.
2
ACB major arc

What is central angle?

The angle subtend by an arc at the centre of a circle is called a
central angle.
ACB is central angle

What is an inscribed angle?

An inscribed angle of an arc is the angle whose vertex is any
point of the arc and whose arms pass through the end of the arc.
BAC and BDC are inscribed angles of BC

What is the relation between central angle of minor arc and

inscribed angle of major arc?
mAOB 2m ACB

PROOF OF RELATION BETWEEN CENTRAL ANGLE OF

MINOR ARC AND INSCRIBED ANGLE OF MAJOR ARC

Which is the minor arc in given figure?

AB is a minor arc of the circle with centre O
Which is an inscribed angle in above figure?
ACB is the angle inscribed in the corresponding major arc.

Which is the central angle of minor arc AB

AOB

GIVEN:

AB
is the minor arc of a circle with centre O. ACB is the angle of inscribed in
.
the corresponding major arc and AOB is the central angle of minor arc AB

What is to prove in statement of the theorem?

To prove m AOB 2m ACB

Extend CO to meet the circle again in D. What is CD ?

CD is the diameter of circle.

Extend CO to meet the circle again in D. CD is the diameter
What is the reason of mOA mOC in AOC?

Radii of same circle.

In AOC , two sides OA and OC are equal, what about
angle opposite to these sides?
m1 m2

What is the reason of m3 m1 m2 ?

Sum of non adjacent interior angle equal to opposite exterior angle.
Why m3 m 1 m1 ?
Because m2 m 1
Q m3 2m1 (I)

What is the similar result in BOC ?

m6 2m 4 (II)

What is the result by adding (I) and (II) ?

m3 m6 2(m1 m 4)

In figure, m1 m 4 mACB and m 3 m 6 m AOB

Hence proved that
mAOB 2m ACB

Now we plot all these in our proof:

Similarly, from BOC

m3 m6 2(m 1 m 4)

By adding (I) and (II)

mAOB 2mACB

In a circle, central angle of minor arc is double in measure of inscribed angle of the
corresponding major arc.

HOME WORK
According to figure, prove that measure of central angle of a minor arc of a circle is
double in measure of the inscribed angle of the corresponding major arc.

CONCLUSION
Today, we have discussed about the relation between central angle of minor arc and
inscribed angle of major arc. Tomorrow, Inshallah, we will discuss relation between
perpendicular and tangent to the circle.
