BASED FETAL ECG EXTRACTION

INTRODUCTION
Biomedical signal processing involves the
analysis of bio signals to provide vital
information
we can potentially determine the state of a
patient's

health

measurements

using

non-invasive

BLOCK DIAGRAM

WORKING
Initialising a gel rubbed on the stomach of the

patient(mother)
Then the electrodes are placed correctly on the

patients stomach
The signals from the electrodes are firstly sent to the

data acquisition block

This block collects the all signals from the electrode

WORKING
Then the signals are passed through the channel selection
block
this block selects the signal that required and the selected
signal is transmitted to the ECG
ECG analyser calculate the signal algorithmically &
mathematically
Then it transmitted to display unit, and displays the
readings

FECG Parameters
For a fetus with a gestational age between 32 to 41

weeks, the heart rate is in the range of 80-240

BPM (beats per minute) with an expected heart
rate around 140 BPM
peak to peak amplitude ranging anywhere between

3-25V, with expected amplitude at 20V2

DATABASE AND
METHODOLOGY
Two datasets were used
the Physio Net 2013 challenge dataset (set-a)
which contained four abdominal signals
second database, contained four abdominal
signals and a direct signal acquired from the
scalp electrode.

DATABASE AND
METHODOLOGY
FLOW CHART

PRE-PROCESSING
Pre-processing was performed to make the
data independent and thus ready for ICA, PCA
was used

PRE-PROCESSING
After PCA, to check if the PCA made the data
independent, the Whiteness Test block was
used

PROCESSING
The TSA ICA block available within the
Advanced Signal Processing Toolkit in Lab
VIEW was used

Four components were obtained at the output.

Two components are periodic and similar to ECG.
The other two components are noises as they are non-periodic
and have irregular amplitudes.

POST-PROCESSING & MEASUREMENTS

In spite of the initial pre-processing of signals,

the noises still existed

Thus, the Wavelet de-noise block was used to

further smoothen the signal.

Post-processing was performed on the two

components achieved after ICA.

POST-PROCESSING & MEASUREMENTS

The amplitude of the two independent
components plays a vital role in deciding
which is the fetal ECG

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This work comes under the very few fetal
ECG extraction algorithms developed using
Lab VIEW platform

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

ADVANTAGES
It can be useful for parallel monitoring of
mothers health
It saves your time
Create your own test & measurement virtual rack
Algorithm parameter increases the systems
efficiency

DISADVANTAGES
Some time it does not estimate the exact
baseline value
Its precision is limited by the number of
classes
It is difficult to extract fetal R-peaks in noisy
background
Require a large number of recorded leads to
reach reliable FECG extraction

APPLICATION
Medical diagnosis
Biomedical research
Hardware implementation
End user application

CONCLUSIONS
The accuracy of the method used in this paper is

dependent on the bio signal database

If the noises have increased due to faulty ECG

acquisition techniques
The pre-processing cut off frequencies will have

to be altered accordingly.
