WHAT IS LISTENING?
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and
interpret
messages in the communication process.
Hearing is NOT THE SAME as listening.
Obeying is NOT THE SAME as listening.
Listening is key to all effective communication.
NON-VERBAL
variations in:
facial expressions
tone,
gestures
volume,
posture / movement
pitch
distance
UNDERSTANDING
Understanding is a key
element in the listening
process.
It
allows
you
to
comprehend
and
assign
meaning to the stimuli that
you hear or otherwise,
perceive.
example: following
directions in traffic
UNDERSTANDING
REMEMBER:
A good communicator should
also be able to deliver his/her
message in a way that the
listeners may have different
understandings.
REMEMBERING
Remembering is keeping the
message in mind for a time; to
recall by mind an act or effort of
memory; think again.
This entails singling out and
retaining important information
from what was said.
This skill can be easily improved
through practice and
applications of long-term
memory techniques.
EVALUATING
Assess,
analyze,
and
then judge the accuracy
of the statements and
conclusions produced by
the speaker.
Take the strengths and
weaknesses
into
consideration.
