HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF YOGA EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION OF YOGA

Yoga means the experience of oneness or


unity with inner being.
It is a science by which the individual
approaches truth.
It makes the organs of the body active in
their functioning.

MEANING OF YOGA

The literal meaning of the word yoga is


YOKE.
The word yoga is derived from the roots
of SANSKRIT word YUJ .

DEFINITIONS OF YOGA

According to Patanjali, checking the


impulses of mind is yoga.
According to Agam, the knowledge
about shiva and shakti is yoga.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF
YOGA EDUCATION

The history of yoga is indeed very old.

The available evidences shows that


history of yoga is related to the Indus
valley civilization.

Yoga is also mentioned in Mahabharata,


Ramayana and Upanishads.

The history of yoga is divided


into several periods:

1.PRE-VEDIC PERIOD

The history of MohenjoDaro and Harappa in


Indus valley reveals
that yoga was practiced
in some forms during
that period.

The idols as well as


statues, which were
found in excavation, are
various yogic postures.

2. VEDIC PERIOD

The words like yoga


and yogic are not
used
in
Vedas
clearly.
The word YUNJATE
used in RIG-VEDA
gives the idea of
the yoga for sense
control.

3. UPANISHADIC PERIOD

PURANS
AND
NADIS
are
important
topics
discussed
in
Upanishads.
In KATHOPNISHAD
the word yoga has
been
used
in
technical sense.

4. EPIC PERIOD

Two great Indian


epics i.e RAMAYANA
and MAHABHARATA
Yoga
was
very
popular.

5. SUTRA PERIOD

All the credit goes


to PATANJALI, who
gave us
the
present
literary
form of yoga in
YOGA
SUTRA
approximately
in
1470 B.C.
MAHAVIRA was a
great practical yogi
of that time.

6. SMRITI PERIOD

Smrities
were
written till about
1000 A.D.
During this period,
we
find
various
changes in ideas,
beliefs,
worship
and customs.

7. MEDIVAL PERIOD

Two cults i.e Natha


cult and Bhakti
cult.

8. MODERN PERIOD

SWAMI
VIVEKANANDA made
yoga very popular.
YOGANANDA
continued to spread
the knowledge of
yoga out of India.
BABA RAMDEV is
putting his endless
efforts to popularize
yoga.

CONCLUSION

Today modern world has understood the


importance of yoga in the life and it is
again back in our society.
Media plays an important role in
highlighting yoga for everyone.
In modern times yoga is recognized for its
fitness, meditative and therapeutic
effects.
