SUMMER 2016

TIMELINE OF EVENTS
Video taped shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and
Philando Castile at the hands of police July 7& 8
Collaborative organizing CSC, MSPS, Kroc efforts
Prayer at the Grotto /Gathering July 14th
Conversation with NDSP July 14th
Vigil and March July 17th
USCCB President appoints task force
on race USCCB site July 21st
Conversation with Presidents office
July 22nd
Vigil and March July 24th

KEY COMPONENTS
Standing against police brutality/ standing for
racial justice
Clarity of standing against violence of any kind
BLM vs. Blue lives matter was a theme throughout the
summer desiring equity NOT equality

Turn out in the middle of the summer was amazing!


Over 110 people came out between the three gatherings
Diverse! -doctoral, grad, fac, staff, undergrad, community
members, local clergy, friends of, St. Marys staff
Received emails from others including students who were
away
Positive press coverage which we were not expecting and
were surprised by

KEY COMPONENTS CONTINUED


Strong desire to continue work and conversation
Student government key to this point
Organizing meetings throughout the summer with the X rouge committee
Campus collaborators wanting to get involved

Gatherings: March wk 1, conversation/ activity, vigil


USCCB appointment of task force and day of prayer and action
on September 9th were catalysts for Campaign this fall
Church responding to the signs of the times
September 9th is the feast of St. Peter Claver- dear to our heart with SB
Catholic Worker
This call/work intersects with our commitment to human dignity and
solidarity with the vulnerable and oppressed/ our CST theme this yearSolidarity as the Soul of Development

PROPOSAL
To continue the conversation and build off of what
happened over the summer a proposal was written to
seek the approval of the CSC to work on the behalf of the
center for the following:
1. Final vigil and gathering Friday September 9 th
2. Campaign for Racial Justice- fall 2016
. 5-6 events that engage the campus community
. Co-sponsoring additional events on campus with
campus collaborators
. An Ask we hope will come from students and others
involved as we gather over the next 2-3 weeks
