In architecture, hyperbolas and parabolas in

windows, arches, and doors were common, and
decorative mouldings 'grow' into plant-derived
forms., Art Nouveau harmonise its forms.
Art Nouveau designers selected and
'modernised' some of the more abstract
elements of Rococo style, such as flame and
shell textures, they also advocated the use of
very stylised organic forms as a source of
inspiration, expanding the 'natural' repertoire to
use seaweed, grasses, and insects.

It was developed fully in the British Isles, but

spread to Europe and North America.
It was largely a reaction against the
impoverished state of the decorative arts at the
time and the conditions in which they were
produced.
It stood for traditional craftsmanship using
simple forms and often applied medieval,
romantic or folk styles of decoration.
It advocated economic and social reform and
has been said to be essentially anti-industrial.
