Purpose:

to argue, and hopefully


resolve, an issue or problem

In

Global Classrooms we will practice


a very formal type of debate. Today,
we will warm up with a less formal
debate.

A few terms

Moderator: the person in charge of the debate who makes


sure that everyone follows the rules and introduces the
speakers. (also called speaker or chairperson)

Motion or Resolution: the topic which is to be debated.

Opening speech: The first presentation of ideas by each


side of the debate

Rebuttal: the responses made to the arguments on the


other side.

Summary speeches or reply speeches: the final


speeches in each side which sum up the key issues in the
debate.

Rules for this debate

Each group must argue the position they are given (even if
you personally disagree!).

Together, they will write an opening speech.

Opening sentence stating position (i.e. best type of pet)
