HISTORY OF
EUTHANASIA
“…To please no one will I
prescribe a deadly drug nor
give advice which may cause
his death...”
“Father of Medicine”
Greek physician Hippocrates

Ancient Greeks and Romans did

not believe in preservation of
life and were tolerant of
suicides.

1300: English Common Law

declared suicide a criminal act.

1920: The book "Permitting the

Destruction of Life not Worthy
of Life" was published.

1935: The Euthanasia Society

of England was formed to
promote euthanasia.
1939: Nazi Germany carried out
an involuntary euthanasia
program, largely in secret.

1995: world's first euthanasia

legislation, the Rights of the
Terminally Ill Act 1995, was
passed in the Northern Territory
of Australia

1997: The legislation was

overturned by Australia’s
Federal Parliament.

Today: Euthanasia is a hotly

debated topic for legalisation in
different parts of world.
Legislative s, NGOs and Medical
associations and advocacy
organizations are key stake
holders.
VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA

Is physician an Angel or Devil???

• Physician assisted ‘suicide’
is the aiding to bring about
death for "compassionate
reasons".
• It begins with a patient's
request for help in ending
their life.
• Usually, the physician then
offers counseling,
information, and
instructions.
• The physician prescribes
the medication that will
end the patient's life but
does not otherwise
participate in the act itself.
• The patient administers
their own terminal dose of
medication.
NON-VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA

Our relatives!! Enemies or Allies???

• Hastening the death of a
person by withdrawing
some form of support and
letting nature take its
course. For example:
• Removing life support
equipment (e.g. turning off
a respirator) or
• Stopping medical
procedures, medications
etc., or
• Stopping food and water
and allowing the person to
dehydrate or starve to
death.
• Not delivering CPR (cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation)
and allowing a person,
whose heart has stopped,
to die.
• Looking at the condition
of the patient, his/her
relatives decide to end
the life of the patient.
• Patient is not asked or
in other words not in a
state to be asked.
• Highly criticized type of
euthanasia.
REASONS FOR:
•People have a right to
decide when they want to
die.
• Wrong to keep people
alive beyond their natural
life span (e.g. life support
machine).
•Gives people the ability
to die with dignity.
•Relatives spared the
agony of watching their
loved ones suffer a slow
and painful death.
• Jesus said – ‘Do unto
others as you would have
them do to you’.
•If you were suffering you
may want your life to end.
REASONS AGAINST:
•People might commit
euthanasia against a person’s
wishes.
• People might recover from
an illness against all odds.
•Doctor’s diagnosis might be
wrong.
•Religions believe in the
Sanctity of Life.
•Doctors are against
euthanasia it is their job to try
and save & protect life.
•Some people think accepting
suffering may have a spiritual
value for your soul.
•hospitals are places where
the terminally ill are cared for,
without losing their dignity.
