What is the trend ?

The overall trend shows an increase
in the frequency of extreme weather
events which would mean a greater
risk of loss to populations.

Is it down to us ?
Is the increase in the frequency of
extreme weather events shown due to
natural climate change, global
warming , the increased reporting of
events or the greater sophistication of
monitoring techniques ?

A risky business !
The risk equationR = H x V
C
H = hazard

V = vulnerability

C = capacity to cope

The risk of a disaster increases according to the changes

in the vulnerability of a population and changes in its ability
to cope.
It would seem that human populations are at greater risk of
loss from extreme weather due in part to the increased
frequency of weather events but also because populations
are more vulnerable and less able to cope with these
events.
So why have populations become
more vulnerable and their ability to
cope decreased ?

Movie time
Produce a short movie to show how people and places are
increasingly at risk from and vulnerable to extreme weather.
Include
Introduction
Section on increasing risk of extreme weather
Section on why populations are increasingly vulnerable to extreme
weather and cannot cope with the events
Conclusion
Credits
Use Byrne p 144 149 and internet sources

Plenary

Produce a spider diagram to show the main points of risk

and vulnerability to extreme weather
