Classification of Well Testing
Why Well testing is Important?

INTRODUCTION
Well test is the acquisition activities to
broaden the knowledge of hydrocarbons
properties and characteristics of the
underground reservoir where hydrocarbons
are trapped.

INTRODUCTION
Well test is divided into three phases
1. Exploration Phase
2. Field Development Phase
3. Production Phase

HISTORY
Over 85 years ago, drillstem testing (DST)
was introduced to the industry, establishing
the initial standard or well testing.
These tests provided a basic understanding
of a reservoirs characteristics
The discipline of well testing has evolved
dramatically since then

HISTORY
. When you get exactly what you need,
youll be equipped to make more efficient
and effective decisions about completion
design, production facility design, and the
establishment of refining procedures.

CLASSIFICATION OF WELL
TESTING
Well test objectives can be classified as:
short-term
long-term.

The well test often indicates how the well

will perform when it is subjected to various
flow conditions.

CLASSIFICATION OF WELL
TESTING

Short Term Test Objectives

Short-term well test objectives typically
involve gathering and analyzing sufficient
well data to obtain a description of the
reservoir system in the vicinity of the
wellbore.

CLASSIFICATION OF WELL
TESTING
Long Term Test Objectives
Long-term well test objectives focus on
gathering and analyzing data to obtain a
complete description of the reservoir
structure.

TYPES OF TESTS
There are two main types of well
fluid testing;
1. Pressure Build Up or Shut In Test
2. Drawdown Test

Pressure Build Up/Shut In

Test
The most commonly prescribed test for a
completion/reservoir evaluation is a
Pressure Build-Up (PBU) or Shut-In test.

DOWNSTREAM TEST
In a drawdown test, the well is produced on
a fixed choke setting until the test
objectives have been reached.

DOWNSTREAM TEST
At these conditions, there will be an
adiabatic shockwave across the choke which
will isolate the well from facilities or other
downstream disturbances

COMPARISON OF THE TWO TESTS

BUILD-UP TESTING
Easy To Perform

DRAWDOWN TESTING:

Easy Analysis

Constant Choke, Not

Constant Rate

Possible Phase &

Cross flow Problems

Simultaneously Test
& Production

Delayed Production

Type-Curve Analysis

WHY THE WELL TESTING IS

IMPORTANT?
A properly designed, executed, and analyzed
well test can provide information about
Formation permeability
Reservoir initial or average pressure
Boundary and discontinuities
