SELECTION AND PROCUREMENT OF ANIMALS FOR FATTENING

QUARANTINE

ANIMAL PREPERATION FOR FATTENING

FEEDS AND FEEDING SYETEMS

FEEDING SCHEDULE FOR FATTENING

ANIMAL PERFORMANCE AND RECORD KEEPING

 Requirement of mutton is increasing day by day

 Mutton Produced 782.1 Th Ton

 To meet the high demand fattening is done to get mutton in a

short time with high marbling and increased palatability

 Fattening also done before certain events such as Eid-ul-Fitr

and Eidul- Azha
 Healthy & alert

 Weight of animal

 Condition of the Animal

 Local breed

 Age of the Animal

 Castration
7-10 days

Identification

Vaccination

ET,PPR,FMD,Pleuropneumonia

Deworming

Dipping
Housing

Subsistence

Animals are tied during the day and put into a protective
shelter at night

Extensive

The flock/herd grazes over large areas of marginal land

Intensive

The animals are confined to yards and shelters and feed is

brought to the flock
Housing

 3×4 F
 Avoid over crowding
 Slatted floors
 Concrete floors
 Dry regions
 Shade is provided
 Drinking water for animals
 Proper drainage system
Adaption Period

Timing the start of animal on feed is critical

when started on feed, brought gradually from a high

roughage-low concentrate to a high concentrate-low
roughage ration over several weeks.

Series of rations that are changed every two to three days to

enable Animal to adapt to a high-concentrate ration within
15 to 20 days.

 Best System for both spp. Is grazing with supplement
feeding of high energy concentrate ration
 Consume 2 percent of their body weight dry matter
from the grazing
 1.5-2.0 percent body weight from supplement
concentrate
 Coccidiosis, ET, Acidosis and foot rot

 Fed on total mixed ration having dry roughages and

concentrate with little supplemented green fodder
 Concentrate ration +wheat straw in 60:40 ratio
 CP=15% ,TDN= 65%
 Conserve the energy
 Feed additives
 Green fodder ……………. vitamin
 Concentrates are those feeds which are low in fibre and high in energy
And used for feedlot fattening

 Maize, Barley, Oats, Sorghum, Bajra, Grams, beet pulp/beet

molasses and cane molasses……………….Energy
 High digestible carbohydrates and have low content of
indigestible fibre
 Protein content of cereals 8-10% and TDN 70-80%
 Cottonseed Cake And Meal, Rapeseed Cake and Meal, Corn
Gluten Feed and Meal, Sunflower Meal, Linseed Meal, Sesame
Cake………………..Protein
 Good quality feedstuff, which are palatable free from
fungus growth and any contaminations
 Roughages are harvested at proper stage
 Early hour of the day 50% of the daily requirement of the
concentrate i.e. 1%
 Grazing for few hours so that animals can consume 2%
of their body weight green fodder
 1% of the body weight of the concentrate ration is offered
in the evening in the shed
In TMR system
The fodder along with dry and/or green fodder is offered
twice a day along with concentrate ration

Free Access To Water

The following data is recorded to evaluate
the performance of the animals
 Initial body weight at zero day of each
animals
 Fortnightly body weight during the period
of fattening of each
 Average daily total feed offered
 Average daily fodder offered
 Date and dose of deworming and
vaccination and health record of animals
