Thesis Title: Informal Social Support

• The goal of transcultural nursing is to provide care
that is congruent with cultural values, beliefs, and
practices.
• Cultural care – refers to values and beliefs that assist,
support, or enable another person to maintain well-
being, improve personal conditioning, or face death
or disability.
• Folk Health/Well-being System – care practices that
are used to heal or assist people in the home or in
the community
Metaparadigm of Nursing
1. PERSON
Referred as “human being”
Caring and capable of being concerned about other’s;
although care is universal, ways of caring vary across
cultures.
2. ENVIRONMENT
Not specifically defined, but the concepts of world views,
social structure, and environmental context are discussed
Closely related to the concept of culture
3. HEALTH
Viewed as a state of well-being
Culturally defined, valued, and practiced
Reflects the ability of individuals to perform their daily roles.
Includes health systems, health care practices
4. NURSING
Defined as a learned humanistic art and science that focuses
on personalized behaviors, functions, and processes to
promote and maintain health
3 modes of actions:
1. cultural care preservation
2. cultural care accommodation
3. cultural care repatterning
Requires an understanding of the specific values, beliefs,
and practices of a client’s culture.
