Leininger’s Cultural

Core Theory
Thesis Title: Informal Social Support
and Quality of Life Of Elderly
• The goal of transcultural nursing is to provide care
that is congruent with cultural values, beliefs, and
practices.
• Cultural care – refers to values and beliefs that assist,
support, or enable another person to maintain well-
being, improve personal conditioning, or face death
or disability.
• Folk Health/Well-being System – care practices that
are used to heal or assist people in the home or in
the community
Metaparadigm of Nursing
1. PERSON
 Referred as “human being”
 Caring and capable of being concerned about other’s;
although care is universal, ways of caring vary across
cultures.

2. ENVIRONMENT
 Not specifically defined, but the concepts of world views,
social structure, and environmental context are discussed
 Closely related to the concept of culture

3. HEALTH
 Viewed as a state of well-being
 Culturally defined, valued, and practiced
 Reflects the ability of individuals to perform their daily roles.
 Includes health systems, health care practices
4. NURSING
 Defined as a learned humanistic art and science that focuses
on personalized behaviors, functions, and processes to
promote and maintain health
 3 modes of actions:
1. cultural care preservation
2. cultural care accommodation
3. cultural care repatterning
 Requires an understanding of the specific values, beliefs,
and practices of a client’s culture.

Applicability of the Theory
 NURSING PRACTICE
• Before assessing the cultural background of a client, nurses
should assess how they are influenced by their own culture.
• The nursing diagnosis for clients should include potential
problems in their interaction with the health care system and
problems involving the effects of culture.
• The planning and implementation of nursing interventions
should be adapted as much as possible to the client's cultural
background.
• Evaluation should include the nurse's self-evaluation of
attitudes and emotions toward providing nursing care to
clients from diverse sociocultural backgrounds.
NURSING EDUCATION
• Transcultural advanced practice nurse is needed “to ensure
culturally congruent care (which has been especially forsaken
in most acute care settings), while participating in the
multidisciplinary planning and case management phases of
the provision of care”
