Learning Objectives:

 Define what is cardiovascular system and its

components.
 Identify the parts and functions of the
cardiovascular system.
 Demonstrate briefly the anatomy and
physiology of the heart.
CARDIOVASCULAR
SYSYTEM
The cardiovascular system carries oxygen and
nutrients to all of the cells in the body. It also picks
up carbon dioxide and other waste products that the
body produces so that they can be disposed of.

The main components of this system are

1. the heart,
2. blood vessels, and
3. blood.
The human heart is a hollow, muscular organ that
weighs between 7 and 15 ounces and is a little
larger than the size of your fist.

Its job is to pump blood through a network of

blood vessels. These vessels form a loop, which
starts at the heart, goes out through your body, and
then ends back at the heart

HEART
Heart Chambers:

Right Left

Right Atrium – receives  Left Atrium - receives

deoxygenated blood returning from the oxygenated blood from the pulmonary
superior vena cava and inferior vena cava. circulation through the pulmonary veins

 Left Ventricle – distributes

Right Ventricle – distributes oxygenated blood to the remainder of the
deoxygenated blood to the lung through body through the aorta
the pulmonary artery
Heart Chambers
Heart Valves:
1. ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVE
o Tricuspid valve - regulates blood flow between the right
atrium and right ventricle.
o Bicuspid /Mitral Valve - lets oxygen-rich blood from your
lungs pass from the left atrium into the left ventricle.
2. SEMILUNAR VALVE
o Pulmonic Valve - controls blood flow from the right
ventricle into the pulmonary arteries, which carry blood to
your lungs to pick up oxygen.
o Aortic Valve - opens the way for oxygen-rich blood to pass
from the left ventricle into the aorta, where it is delivered to
the rest of your body.
4 kinds of valves:
Blood Vessels:
• 3 main types:
1. ARTERY – carry oxygen-rich blood away from your
heart
 Pulmonary Artery – carries unoxygenated blood
 Aorta – Largest artery
2. VEINS – carry oxygen-poor blood back to your heart.
 Pulmonary vein – carries oxygenated blood
 Vena Cavae – largest veins ( superior vena cavae and inferior
vena cavae)
3. Capillaries - the smallest branches
Arteries and Veins
BLOOD
• The last main component of the cardiovascular
system is blood.
• Blood flows throughout your entire body, carrying
oxygen and nutrients to all of your cells and taking
away the waste products that they produce.
• Blood is a fluid that carries several different kinds of
cells.
• Three types : red blood cells,
white blood cells, and
special cell fragments called platelets.
