FLUID POWER SYSTEM FUNDAMENTALS

Introduction
Most industrial processes require substances to
be transformed from one place to another.
products may be shaped (or) compressed (or)
held. Done by Prime movers
Prime movers are operated by (i) electrical
system (ii) Hydraulic system (iii) Pneumatic
system.
In electrical system, the rotary motion are
provided by simple electrical motors.
In Hydraulic system, enclosed water (or) oil
can be used to convey energy from one location
to another
In Pneumatic system, enclosed gas is used to
transfer energy from one location to another.

Hydraulic Principles

There are certain governing principles in a

hydraulic system
All liquids are non-compressible and can be
used to transmit power.
Any load to be lifted offers resistance to
flow of liquid. This resistance to flow is
pressure.
If the capacity of the pump is more, then it
pumps out more liquid.
The flow rate is nothing to do with the load
carrying capacity of the hydraulic system.
In the operation of a hydraulic system, the
liquid chooses the path of least resistance.

Fluid

Fluid poweris a term describing hydrulics and

pneumaticstechnologies.
Fluid is a substance which is capable of
flowing.
Both technologies use a fluid (liquid or gas) to
transmit power from one location to another.
Hydraulics, the fluid is a liquid (usually oil).
Pneumatics uses a gas (usually compressed
air).
Both are forms ofpower transmission, which
is the technology of converting power to a
more useable form and distributing it to the
location where it is needed.

Advantages of Fluid Power

High horsepower-to-weight ratio.

Safety.
Force or torque can be held constant.
High torque at low speed.
Pressurized fluids can be transmitted over
long distancesand through complex machine
configurations with only a small loss in power.

Elimination of complicated mechanical parts.
Motion can be almost instantly reversed.
