LEVERS
The Moment Of Force

The Moment Of Force

O A force can be used to produce

a turning effect to do work. For

example, a nut can be
tightened or loosened with a
turning effect by using a
spanner.
this turning effect is called
the moment of force

The moment of force is the product of

the force (F) and the perpendicular
distance (d) from the line of action of
the force to the fulcrum.

Moment of Force = F

of force

The moment of force is depend on:

* The size of force applied
* The perpendicular distance from the
line
of action of the force to the fulcrum
(the distance between the force &
the
fulcrum)
The larger the force applied, the
greater the moment of force. The
longer the perpendicular distance from
the line of action of the force to the
fulcrum, the greater the moment of
force.

PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS

The effort and the load produce

opposing moments
When the lever is in EQUILIBRIUM , the
sum of the anticlockwise moments
about a point is equal to the sum of the
clockwise
The formulae according to the
Principle Of Moments:
Load (newtons) x Distance of the load
from the fulcrum (metres) = Force
(newtons) x Distance of the force from
the fulcrum (metres)
