CONTINUOUS VARIATION
o The differences in a character are not distinct.
o Examples : height, weight, chest circumferences,
body mass and hand span.
o Exhibits a spectrum of phenotypes with
intermediate characters
o The characters are quantitative and can be
measured and graded from one extreme to the
other.

o Shows a normal graph distribution

o Influenced by environmental factor

o Two or more genes control the same character
o The phenotypes is usually controlled by many
types of alleles.

DISCONTINUOUS VARIATION.
o A type of variation in which the differences in a
character are distinctive.
o Examples : the four types of fingerprint pattern,
blood groups, the ability to roll tongue, attached
or free ear lobes, thumb hyperextension.

o The characters are qualitative and they cannot be

measured or graded from one extreme to the
other.
o Shows a discrete distribution.

o Is not influenced by environmental factors.

o A single gene determines the differences in the
traits of a character.
o The phenotype is controlled by a type of allele.
