Units & Measurements

Conversions and how they work!

Conversion By Name
centi-means

one hundredth, milli

means one thousandth

kilo

start

Centi
1/100

Milli
1/1000

We have used many

units in this class so
far!
Remember: The Loop, The Cord, The Yardstick
We can easily convert from one unit to the
next by using Conversion Factors
AKA ratios we already know or can find
out!
1 in. = 2.54 cm

1 pcord = ??? cm

1 hoop = ??? In.

Do you see where I

am going???

FUNNY THING IS.

algebraic use of units is similar
to how we treated variables
just like 3x + 5x = 8x,
3 in + 5 in = 8 in
The units also cancel out like variables when
dividing..You will see this in the next slide.

Now that you know how these units act, we can

get back to converting them

We are using equivalent equations

to convert.

1 ft = 12 in is equiv. to

1 ft/12 in = 1 or 12 in/1 ft = 1
CM to INCHES
Complete on
calculator!
Mr. Cadray talk to

me about rounding
please read p. 5
and post questions

4cm
1
1 4cm= 4cm 1in
1 2.54cm
4cm=

4 cm = 4 cm * 1 in/ 2.54 cm
(multiply right side well both
sides really right?- of equation by
a value equiv. to 1)

The mantra goes like

this
To convert, we multiplied by an
expression that enabled us to cancel
the unit we DONT want (cm), to
cancel and leave the units we DO
want (in.)

Other nice things to

know when converting
Sometimes we need to round!
This will make our answer not
exact!
Or Approximate

Lets Practice a Few!

Geometric Drawings and Pictures

length can be described without units, given units
are all the same
AB = 5 and BC = 10, AB + BC = AC, so AC = 5 + 10 or
AC= 15
length given as an equation (equals number or
equals name)
AB = 5
or AC = AB + BC
When a drawing is not present, start the problem
drawing and writing all known lengths
recognize parallel notation
