The Challenge
Create a design that has something
unique to offer design professionals,
commercial buyers, and the
community alike. It has to be a brave
new idea that no one has ever seen,
while carrying commercial value and
pays careful attention to the well-being
of its surrounding community. Our
judges are looking for a well-thoughtout design that is both phenomenal
and useful, executed in bold, creative
manner.
ARCHITECTURAL
FROM ORDINARY STRUCTURES TO
PHENOMENAL DESIGN
The shapes and structures around us
influencethe way we behave. With this mind,
what would you create to improve the way we
live? Design an architectural piece that uses a

the box and put a new spin on dealing with
familiar problemswe face in our daily life. It
could be the deep of the jungle or in the heart
of the city but it needs to give a new twist to
solving problems. Let your design shape a
whole new perspective on the impact of
architectural design on our world. Your project
layouts size must be below 10 acres.

Characteristics and
Guidelines of Great
Public Spaces
A public space may be a gathering spot or part of a
neighborhood, downtown, special district, waterfront
or other area within the public realm that helps
promote social interaction and a sense of community.
Possible examples may include such spaces as
plazas, town squares, parks, marketplaces, public
commons and malls, public greens, piers, special
areas within convention centers or grounds, sites
within public buildings, lobbies, concourses, or public
spaces within private buildings.
As with all categories of Great Places, it is important
to identify what sets a space apart from others
spaces so as to qualify it for a Great Spaces
designation.
Description of the
Public Space
Where is the space located, and what is its
setting? (Downtown, neighborhood,
waterfront, city center, business or
entertainment districts, historic area, parks,
etc.)
What role, if any, did plans and planning
contribute to the creation of the space? Is
there special zoning or ordinances that
allowed for the creation of the space?
How large is the area?
When was the space created?
PLACEMAKING
WHAT IF WE BUILT OUR COMMUNITIES AROUND
PLACES?
As both an overarching idea and a hands-on
approachfor improving a neighborhood, city, or
region,Placemakinginspires people to collectively
reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of
every community. Strengthening the connection
between people and the places they share,
Placemaking refers to a collaborative process by
whichwe can shape our public realm in order to
maximize shared value. More than just
promotingbetter urban design, Placemaking
facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular
attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities
that define a place and support its ongoing evolution.
