In 1967 Pierre Trudeau met his future wife Margaret Sinclair


while vacationing in Tahiti. Despite the 28 year age gap
between the two they became very close, most likely due to
their political backgrounds. Margaret was the daughter of
former Liberal Member of Parliament James Sinclair. The two
married in a private ceremony in 1971, but after 3 children,
and thirteen years of marriage they divorced in 1984.

On January 26, 1976 Pierre Trudeau became the first


NATO leader to visit Cuba after the 1960 American
Economic embargo. The trip was very controversial at the
time because Cuba had just sent its troops into Angola.
Trudeau became good friends with the Cuban Communist
leader Fidel Castro. Despite the strong trading
relationship with the United States, Trudeau risked U.S
anger and reached out to the Cubans.
