Climate

Change
How To Live With It!!
& How To Fix It!!

How To Fix It
The

Earth has warmed 1.5 degrees

fahrenheit, on average, since the late
19th century.
Most of this warming has occurred since
1960.
Since climate change is fuelled by
individuals, businesses, cities, and
nations around the world, shouldnt
solutions come from them??

Individuals
Can 1 person in 7 billion make a
difference?
Swiss scientists say humanity could limit
the effects if each person used just
2,000 watts of power a year.
The average American consumes
12,000 watts/year!
A Bangladeshi uses 300 watts/year!

How To Fix It?

Efficient

living through downsizing- the

average US home has increased in size
by 60% since 1973.
Leaving you car at home 2 days a week
can reduce your greenhouse gas
emissions by roughly 2 ton/year.
1,600 pounds of CO2 emissions could be
saved a year by washing laundry in cold
water.

Businesses
In 2009, MITs Sloan Management Review , first
surveyed businesses about sustainability efforts,
and most only did what was necessary to meet
regulatory requirements.
In 2014, almost two-thirds of companies said
sustainability was top of their agendas!
We are guests on this planet, so conservation is
important to help ensure our resources are
sustained for generations to come. (Stephanie
Linnartz, Exec. Vice President, Marriott
International)

How To Fix It?

Marriott

has cut its greenhouse gas

emissions by 12% since 2007 and aims
to cut energy and water use by 20% by
2020.
Airbus hopes to create silent, CO2 free,
hybrid electric passenger aircraft by
2050.
Levi Strauss & Co. has saved 260 million
gallons of water since 2011 by cutting
use during garment production.

Cities
More

than half the worlds population

live in urban areas.
By 2050 cities will have two-thirds of
people on the planet.
Urban areas already account for
estimated 76% of CO2 emissions from
energy use.

How To Fix It?

London has installed over 700 electric
car chargers in the city.
Georgetown, Texas, US is one of fastest
growing cities, plans to be powered by
renewable energy by 2017.
More than a quarter of all trips in
Amsterdam are made by bicycle.
Drammen, Norway, is heated almost
entirely by water from the local fjord.

Nations
In 2014 the IPCC warned of severe,
pervasive and irreversible impacts unless
greenhouse gases are curtailed.
For solutions see notes from last week

World - How To Fix It?

Geoengineering - large scale intervention
in planetary environment to counteract
climate change.
Carbon dioxide removal
Stratospheric Aerosols
Space sunshade
Marine cloud seeding
