Example 1.3
Question :
We observe when pumping out propane liquid
from a storage tank with volume of the tank is 50
m3. pressure and temperatur in the tank are 12
atm and 35oC. Liquid pumped out from the tank
with flow of 5 ton/hr. to keep pressure in the tank
still in 12 atm, a part of liquid pumped out from
the thank with flow of F ton/hr, after that liquid
was evaporated and the vapor flowed back in to
the tank. the density of liquid is 800 kg/m3.
determine the value of F.

= 800
kg/m3
P = 12
atm
(constant
T
= 35 C
) = 308
K

5
ton/hr
F
ton/hr

Liquid volume = VL m3
Vapor volume = VG m3
Pressure of tank (P) = 12 atm

Temperature of liquid in the tank (T) = 35oC

= 308 K

solution
Mass balance
Accumulation = input output + generation
In this case we use the law of mass conservation (HK.
Kekekalan massa), where in this law there is not
generation because total mass impossible to formed or
disappear. so the equation will be :
Accumulation = input output

Where
:

For liquid system

= 800 Kg/m3
Fin = 0 ton/hr
Fout = (5 + F ) ton/hr
Mass (M) =
Mass Flow (F) =

So,
= Fin Fout

+ = Fin Fout
= Fin Fout
800 kg/m3 = 0 ton/hr (5 + F)
ton/hr

800 kg/m3 = (5 + F) . 1000

kg/hr
= 1.25 (5 + F) Kg/hr

(3.1)

vapor system
For

R = 0.08206
L.atm/Kgmol.K
Mr propane = 44
Kg/Kgmol
T = 308 K
P = 12 atm
To get mass of vapor
we use the equation
of ideal gas :

So,
Fin Fout

(F 0)kg/hr

= 47.87F Kg/hr

(3.2)

Where
:

Total Volume = VL + VG
50 m3 = VL + VG
(3.3)
If we use the differensial
from equation 3.3
1.25 (5 + F) Kg/hr = - 47.87F
toward will be :
Kg/h
= +
-6.25 Kg/hr - F Kg/hr = - 47.87F
0= +
Kg/hr
= - (3.4)
F = 0.134 kg/hr
From the equation 3.1,
3.2, and 3.4 we will get :
