TRANSFORMATION
MOVEMENT AND/ OR CHANGE OF A SHAPE BY
USING ROTATION (TURN), REFLECTION (FLIP),
OR TRANSLATION (SLIDE).

Under teachers guidance manipulate your tangrams by rotating,

sliding and flipping each piece. You can use more than one tangram at
a time. (Teacher) can have tangrams with magnets on the back so that
the students can visibly see how she/ he is working them. Students
can also be called up to the board to work specific problems given by
the teacher.

Click on the following link which will allow you to

manipulate tangram pieces using transformation.

TRANSLATION
TO MOVE OR SLIDE THE SHAPE
WITH OUT ROTATING, RESIZING OR FLIPPING

The light blue ABC is the original, while

the darker blue ABC was translated or
slides up 3 and left 2.
Normally you will be directed with arrows
for the direction you need to slide.

Click on the link below for an interactive view of how translation works.

A reflection is a function from the plane to plane that pairs the

points exactly over the L line. Review the words to the left that
are associated with reflections.

Using the tangrams, use one or more shape to create a design. Using a play mirror have the
students place it at the base of their design. Once they see what the mirror image will look
like have them create the image they would have seen in the mirror. Practice makes perfect!
As you begin to master simple tangrams, have your students create more difficult designs.

A rotation is defined as a transformation of the

plane. Done so by holding down one point or the
center while rotating the plane to a clockwise or
counter clockwise direction.
Most rotations are moved by a certain angle or
degree of angle.

Have the students gather two of the same

tangram shapes. Lay the first one down on
the grid paper, place the second piece
over the first. Placing a finger on one
corner and rotate the top piece. Repeat
with different corners and different
shapes.
